The Man United left-back only made 15 starts across all competitions last season

Manchester United fans will have to wait even longer for the return of their star left-back, Luke Shaw, due to a fresh injury setback. This comes as a blow to the team and its supporters who were eagerly anticipating his comeback.

Shaw has yet to make an appearance this season after suffering a calf injury just days before the campaign began. This is not his first brush with fitness issues; he spent much of the past year on the sidelines with various injuries and hasn't appeared for United since February.

The club had hoped that Shaw would return following September's international break, but those plans have been thwarted. Now, 254 days since he last wore their shirt in a competitive match, there is still no definitive timeline as to when he will be back in action.

History of injuries

Since signing for United from Southampton in 2014 in a £30 million deal, Shaw has unfortunately dealt with numerous injuries. The 29-year-old has suffered hamstring, ankle and foot injuries during his tenure at Old Trafford. His most notable absence was during the 2015/16 season when he suffered a double leg fracture in a Champions League fixture against PSV Eindhoven which required six months of recovery time.

Last season also saw him sidelined due to muscle injury after making just 15 starts across all competitions. Despite these setbacks, former England manager Gareth Southgate named him in his squad for Euro 2024 where he made three appearances and started in their final defeat against Spain.

Filling the void

In Shaw's absence at club level, Diogo Dalot and Noussair Mazraoui have stepped up as left-backs and are expected to continue doing so over the coming weeks.

However, there may be hope on the horizon once Ruben Amorim takes charge as manager and understands that Amorim, who recently left Sporting Lisbon, is set to become the new United manager. It remains unclear when he will first take charge, with interim boss Ruud van Nistelrooy leading the team for their Carabao Cup clash against Leicester.

While Shaw's injury setback is a blow to Manchester United and its fans, it also presents an opportunity for other players to step up and make their mark. As we wait for further updates on Shaw's fitness status and return timeline, all eyes are on how the team will adapt in his absence.
