DAZN presently possesses the rights to broadcast five games every matchweek, one of which is a compulsory free match

Spanish soccer’s elite LaLiga is making a triumphant return to free-to-air television in Spain, thanks to a sub-licensing deal between public-service broadcaster RTVE and rightsholder DAZN.

RTVE has struck an agreement with DAZN that will see it air one La Liga live fixture each gameweek on its Teledeporte terrestrial channel for the remainder of the 2025-26 campaign. The arrangement kicked off with the January 16 matchup between Espanyol and Girona.

DAZN currently holds rights to five games each matchweek, including one mandatory free match. This game will likely continue being aired in conjunction with RTVE’s coverage. Previously, DAZN showcased its weekly free match as part of its ‘freemium’ content offering which required account sign-up. However, Teledeporte's open terrestrial broadcast option is expected to attract more viewers.

Long-Term plans and historical significance

DAZN's LaLiga rights package extends through 2032 after renewing their agreement last November. This suggests that they are likely seeking a long-term free-to-air solution for their weekly match beyond the end of the 2025-26 season. This development marks only the second time in 35 years that LaLiga will be shown on public service television; previously it was during the 2015-16 campaign - which was itself first since 1989-90.

The partnership also enhances RTVE’s growing sports portfolio, particularly its soccer offering. In October, they secured a multi-year package of rights for Copa del Rey knockout cup competition allowing them exclusive coverage of up to 116 matches annually through till the end of the 2026-27 campaign. Moreover, they have secured the rights for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where Spain is considered a favorite, and will broadcast the UEFA European Championships in 2028.

RTVE has reportedly made a substantial investment in securing high-profile sports rights for the forthcoming years, with an expenditure exceeding €360 million. This considerable investment extends beyond soccer, encompassing other major global sporting events. These include the Summer Olympic Games scheduled for 2028 and 2032, the Winter Olympics set for 2026 and 2030, as well as cycling's iconic event - Tour de France which is secured through till 2030.

Most recently, they acquired rights to motor racing’s all-electric Formula E series. This move by RTVE signifies a significant investment in sports broadcasting that will undoubtedly enhance their viewership numbers while providing Spanish sports fans with more accessible ways to enjoy their favorite games.
