Barcelona has reportedly initiated talks to sign Manchester United forward, Mason Greenwood. This move comes after the player's successful loan spell at Getafe, which has piqued the interest of the Spanish giants.
Greenwood, a 22-year-old forward, spent his season on loan at Getafe following a decision by Manchester United not to reintegrate him into their first team last summer. The decision came in light of his arrest in January 2022 over charges of attempted rape, controlling behaviour and assault. However, all charges against him were dropped in February 2022.
Despite this controversy and subsequent backlash from supporters over his potential return to Old Trafford, Greenwood managed to thrive during his time with Getafe. His performance there caught the attention of Barcelona as they prepare for their summer transfer window.
Barcelona see Greenwood as a cheaper option in attack
According to reports in Spain, Barcelona has made an initial approach towards signing Greenwood but hasn't yet committed to any formal negotiations with Manchester United. They are keen on understanding more about Greenwood’s situation before making any concrete decisions.
The report also suggests that with only a year remaining on his contract with United this summer, Barcelona considers Greenwood as a ‘low cost’ option for their upcoming transfer window.
While there is interest from Barcelona and other clubs alike due to his impressive performance at Getafe, uncertainty looms over Greenwoods' future at Old Trafford. Sir Jim Ratcliffe - Manchester United’s new co-owner - refused to rule out the possibility of welcoming back the young forward into Erik ten Hag’s squad but stated that a new decision will be made regarding this matter soon.
Getafe’s president has declared his intention to sign Greenwood
On another note adding further complexity is that according to Getafe president; it seems like Greenwood himself wishes for another season with them rather than returning to Manchester United or moving elsewhere.
Getafe president, Angel Torres, said:
‘He has a clear conscience, he is very comfortable and crazy about staying another year, It’s a matter that they [United] have to decide. There is new ownership. They have to decide.
‘In Spain he has a market but they [Barcelona] have money. Barca’s way of playing would suit him well but it depends on Manchester United. If it’s true, he’ll tell me.’
As the summer transfer window approaches, all eyes will be on Greenwood's next move. Whether he returns to Old Trafford, stays at Getafe, or makes a switch to Barcelona remains uncertain. Regardless of the outcome, it is clear that Greenwood's talent and potential have not gone unnoticed in the world of football.
