Newcastle United left-back Jamal Lewis is reportedly on the brink of a surprising transfer to Brazilian football powerhouse, Sao Paulo. The 26-year-old Northern Ireland international player is said to be currently in Brazil finalising the move.
Lewis joined Premier League club Newcastle in 2020 from Norwich City for £15m and has since been capped 36 times by Northern Ireland. However, despite his potential and talent, he has struggled to secure a regular spot in the team since signing a five-year deal with the Magpies.
The defender has made only 36 appearances for Newcastle, with his last game for the club back to January 2023.
He spent the previous season on loan at Championship side Watford and hasn't participated in any of Newcastle's opening league or cup games this season.
While neither club has officially confirmed the transfer yet, Northern Ireland manager Michael O'Neill has hinted that it is imminent.
Northern Ireland manager, Michael O'Neill, said:
"Jamal is planning to join us later in the week after he completes his visa requirements and medical checks in Brazil. We wish him the best of luck in his new move to Sao Paulo."
Newcastle boss Eddie Howe has also addressed the news of Lewis' exit, as well as the potential departure of other players.
Eddie Howe, manager of Newcastle United, said:
"Maybe the players that have been linked with a move, like Jamal Lewis could possibly leave, but certainly we hope no one else does."
This impending transfer marks an exciting chapter for Lewis, and football fans in England and Brazil will be eager to see how this unexpected shift will impact both teams involved.
Jamal Lewis' move to Sao Paulo is a significant development for his career at both club and international level. It will be interesting to see how this change of scenery affects his trajectory.
