The Swedish side have been a bogey club for Scottish clubs in recent seasons

Fresh from their respective domestic victories at the weekend, Rangers and Malmo are set to face off in a thrilling Europa League encounter at Eleda Stadion in Sweden on Thursday.

While Rangers have performed very well in Europe in recent years, this away trip will no doubt fill some of their fans with trepidation.

Malmo have proved the ultimate test for several Scottish clubs in the recent past and this game should prove a very tricky opening to Rangers' Europa League campaign.

In two visits to Malmo in the last 12 years, Rangers have suffered defeat on both occasions. However, they are not the only Scottish Premiership clubs to falter there. Both Celtic and Hibernian have also been beaten on trips to Malmo, the boyhood club of football great Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

Rangers, managed by Phillipe Clemet, celebrated a 3-0 victory over Dundee in the Scottish League Cup at the weekend. Meanwhile, Malmo continue to dominate their league, holding an impressive 8-point lead over nearest rivals Djurgårdens at the top of the Swedish Allsvenskan table, after an impressive 4-0 win against Hacken last time out.

Both of these clubs are among the very biggest in their respective countries and it should prove to be a very competitive contest. Nevertheless, Scottish clubs' recent form away at Malmo will leave Clement with cause for concern.

Injury woes continue for the visitors too as Ridvan Yilmaz, Danilo and Rabbi Matondo are ruled out. Cyriel Dessers remains the main threat up front, with Nedim Bajrami supporting from the left side. Captain James Tavernier is also expected to feature at right-back as always.

Rangers fans eagerly anticipate this match-up between two top-performing teams in their respective leagues. The stage is set for an exciting Europa League encounter that promises to be a thrilling spectacle, but a nervous one for the visitors.
