Despite significant signings, Neville identifies midfield and defence as major issues for Manchester United

Former Manchester United defender, Gary Neville, has recently expressed his surprise at the club's summer transfer business. The Red Devils have made significant investments in Benjamin Sesko, Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo. This level of spending was unexpected by Neville, particularly following the team's loss in the UEFA Europa League final.

Despite these high-profile signings, Neville points out two major issues that Manchester United needs to address - their midfield and defence. It remains to be seen whether these problems can be resolved before the transfer window closes. The club has been linked with players like Carlos Baleba from Brighton; however, securing a deal for this midfielder seems challenging.

Man United's weakness

Neville emphasizes that Manchester United needs to bolster their midfield and defence significantly. They require a player who can control the game from midfield while also providing defensive support. In terms of defence, investment in another reliable central defender is crucial.

Gary Neville, Manchester United legend, said:

“Mbeumo, Cunha, Sesko – a lot of eyes on them at United. I think Manchester United fans, including myself, are surprised they’ve gone and spent that level of money. We thought that obviously, after the Europa League final, the money wouldn’t be there at that level. So to get those three players, who look like a really good profile – two of them have Premier League experience – we need them to do well, because the rest of the team.

“We need a goalkeeper. There are definitely issues with the defence and midfield. But if the three strikers are a real handful and are scoring goals… last season United’s return in front of goal was really poor, so it’s really important that Sesko, Mbeumo and Cunha get off to a really good start.”

Manchester United has already spent heavily on enhancing their attacking unit. As such, it wouldn't come as a surprise if they had to wait until next summer to improve other areas of their team.

Future prospects for Man Utd

The key question now is whether the new attacking players can hit the ground running and help propel Manchester United back into Champions League contention. With substantial funds already invested in this area of play, fans will be eagerly awaiting positive results from these new signings.
