Univision continues to hold the Spanish-language rights to El Tri matches

In a surprising move, FOX Deportes, the Spanish-language sports channel from FOX, has secured the English-language TV rights to the Mexico national team games. This means that the Spanish-language channel will now broadcast games in English, a significant shift from its traditional Spanish-language programming.

Previously, Univision held the rights to broadcast Mexico's international games, such as friendlies, to Spanish-language audiences in the United States. However, with this new deal, FOX Deportes will become the go-to channel for English-language audiences interested in Mexico's national team games.

The deal kicks off with the friendlies Mexico is playing in during the October international break. On Saturday, October 14, Mexico will face Ghana in Charlotte, North Carolina. Following this, on Tuesday, October 17, Mexico will go head-to-head with four-time World Cup champions Germany. Both games will be available for English-language audiences on FOX Deportes.

The play-by-play voice on FOX Deportes for the Mexico vs. Ghana game will be Rodolfo Landeros, who will be joined by Mariano Trujillo. For the Mexico vs. Germany game, Trujillo will serve as the analyst, with Adrian Garcia-Marquez taking on play-by-play duties.

Univision retains Spanish-language rights

While FOX Deportes has acquired the English-language rights, Univision continues to hold the Spanish-language rights to Mexico games. This is significant as Mexico has a large following in the United States, and this move by FOX Deportes will only increase fans’ access to El Tri.

FOX Deportes' acquisition of the English-language rights to the Mexico national team games may be a strategic move to capture viewers, possibly capitalizing on the disinterest of other broadcasters. This low-risk move could potentially pay off, especially considering that Mexico’s games during the international break are against World Cup-caliber opponents.

In addition to the games, both pregame and postgame coverage will be available on FOX Deportes. Fans can also access each match on the FOX Sports app, although an authenticated login with a TV provider is required to ensure access to FOX Deportes.

This move by FOX Deportes is a significant development in the sports broadcasting landscape, offering English-speaking fans of the Mexico national team a new platform to follow their favourite team.
