Italian international Federico Chiesa has expressed his intention to return to Serie A following a challenging stint at Liverpool under Arne Slot. Despite being part of a Premier League-winning squad, the winger has found consistent game time elusive and is now keen on reigniting his career back in Italy.
Chiesa's transfer to Liverpool was initially seen as the beginning of an exciting new chapter. However, reality proved more complex as he found himself increasingly sidelined from the main squad. He ended up with just 726 minutes of action across all competitions for the season, a far cry from what was expected when he joined. The forward openly discussed how his situation deteriorated under Slot's management, leading to frustration and disappointment.
Liverpool player, Federico Chiesa, said:
"Since the beginning of 2026, I've played very little. I have a great relationship with Liverpool. In January, the club and Slot told me I couldn't leave; they needed me, also for numerical reasons. We were in a state of emergency. I understood the situation and I was left smiling,"
“I want to play. If I don’t find consistency in the Premier League, I’ll have to look elsewhere. I barely played in my first year at Liverpool, and in the last one, very little. I’ll go on a training camp in the US, then I’ll talk to the club and the new manager, Iraola, and we’ll see."
Unbroken bond with Juventus
Despite leaving Turin amidst controversy, Chiesa maintains a strong bond with Juventus. He revealed that he never truly wanted to leave Bianconeri and is open to making a sensational return. Dismissing rumors about salary demands influencing his departure, Chiesa insists that it was management decisions rather than financial considerations that led him away from Juventus.
Federico Chiesa added:
"I'd love to return to Juventus. It's also been said that I demanded a lot of money, but the truth is different: I was never offered a renewal. We never even discussed it. Giuntoli and Thiago Motta
"Fede, we don't need you: find a team." I was lucky; I started again with one of the top five in the world, Liverpool. But Juventus is always in my heart and I'd like to return. I've never discussed money with Juve and I never will."
Chiesa also addressed criticism surrounding his absence during crucial World Cup play-offs in March for Italy's national team. The winger clarified misconceptions about his physical condition and reaffirmed commitment towards representing Italy (Azzurri). He expressed gratitude towards interim managers who publicly supported him during this challenging period. As prospects of returning home grow stronger, Chiesa remains open-minded about potential destinations within Serie A. While Juventus holds preference due to past affiliations, he emphasizes that playing regular football is paramount after two difficult seasons in England where he felt stagnation in development.
Federico Chiesa's journey at Liverpool has been a challenging one, marked by limited game time and frustration. However, the Italian international is looking forward to reigniting his career back in Serie A, with Juventus being his preferred destination. His commitment towards regular football and representing Italy remains unwavering despite recent challenges.
