The US broadcasting giant will provide television and live streaming coverage of the motor racing staple for three more years
The biggest organisation in global motorsport, Formula One, has signed a three-year extension to its existing broadcast rights deal with ESPN across Latin America and the Caribbean. The Disney-owned network will continue to air all F1 races of the upcoming three seasons in these territories, across its various channels.
Traditional TV coverage will be available on ESPN Extra, while fans will have the opportunity to follow all of the action via live streaming on the Disney Star+ streaming platform.
However, in Argentina and Chile, ESPN will divide linear television coverage between its own channels and Fox Sports, the network now under the ownership of ESPN parent company Disney. This partnership also does not include Mexico or Brazil.
Disney's takeover of 21st Century Fox saw it take on the rights to Formula One in these territories in 2019. Therefore, Disney's sports arm ESPN will now become the sole rights holder and divide coverage between various channels, including the Fox Sports network.
The prior deal between Fox and Formula One was signed in 2018 and was set to last for five years. Now that time has expired, Disney, via ESPN, has commited itself to another three years of Formula One broadcast rights.
Formula 1 Director of Media and Content Creation, Ian Holmes, said of the deal:
“ESPN’s broadcast of Formula One over the years has enabled the sport to increase its global reach and attract a new and diverse fan base. We are delighted to renew our partnership and continue our long tradition of bringing top quality broadcasting to our fans in Latin America and the Caribbean.”
On top of providing live coverage of each grand prix and qualifying on TV and via live stream, ESPN will continue to create dedicated content around the sport, including in video and podcast form.
Executives at both ESPN and Formula One will hope this renewal of their partnership will continue to boost the profile of the sport in the Latin America and Caribbean region.
