The Argentine midfielder has been Chelsea’s best player this season

Enzo Fernandez, the Chelsea midfielder, has recently opened up about his new role at Chelsea and shared insights into his personal well-being. After a challenging first 18 months with the club, he is now feeling "very good" on a personal level.

Chelsea acquired Fernandez from Benfica in January 2023 for an impressive £106m - setting a British record at the time. This came after he had put on an outstanding performance for Argentina in their victorious 2022 World Cup campaign in Qatar.

Despite shining under Graham Potter's management, last season proved to be more challenging for Fernandez. He struggled to make an impact and spent most of the season battling pain from a hernia issue.

Overcoming challenges

Adding to his struggles on-field, off-field issues also plagued him. The 23-year-old was embroiled in a racism incident following Argentina’s Copa America success during summer. His start to the campaign was mixed as Enzo Maresca dropped him from October’s visit to Anfield which led him spending four games benched. However, since November's international break, there has been a significant turnaround in Fernandez's career trajectory at Chelsea.

Fernandez has started every league game since November and is arguably playing some of his best football yet with Chelsea. His recent performances have seen him score three goals and provide four assists over eight league games - including scoring an important third goal against Tottenham Hotspur.

The Argentine international seems to have found new vigor as he thrives in this fresh role within the team structure. He has begun picking up dangerous positions and making timely arrivals into the box – elements that were previously missing from his gameplay.

Personal reflections

Speaking about this newfound form and role within Chelsea FC, Fernandez admitted that he feels really good personally – a sentiment that is clearly reflected in his recent performances.

Enzo Fernandez, Chelsea midfielder, said:

“I learned the position in which I had to play, over time I got the idea of what the coach wanted, he [Maresca] explained to me what he wanted and I was getting the concept, reading the games. There is still a long way to go.

“On a personal level I have been feeling very good. The team has shown a very strong character, always working with humility, and showing that great things can be achieved.”

Enzo Fernandez's journey at Chelsea has been one of resilience and personal growth. Despite initial struggles, he has managed to find his footing and is now thriving in his new role. His story serves as an inspiration for sports fans and sports betting enthusiasts alike, reminding us all that perseverance can lead to unexpected turnarounds.
