The European Broadcasting Union (EBU), a significant alliance of public service broadcasters in Europe, has recently struck a comprehensive media deal with UEFA, the governing body for European soccer. This agreement grants EBU the rights to broadcast the 2025 Women’s Euro matches.
Under this new agreement, a total of 37 EBU broadcasters from 34 member states will showcase every match from the WEURO 2025 tournament live on their respective free-to-air services. This extensive coverage ensures that fans across Europe will have access to all matches from this highly anticipated women's soccer tournament.
EBU executive director of sport, Glen Killane, said:
“This agreement for UEFA Women’s Euro 2025 is unprecedented in terms of broadcast reach and reinforces our commitment to showcasing women’s football, ensuring it continues to grow and thrive.
“The deal reflects the core strategy of the EBU and its members of enhancing the promotion of women’s sports with strong and even more increased members’ coverage complemented by the women’s football offer on Eurovision Sport.”
Supplemental content and extra access points for fans
In addition to broadcasting live games, highlights and shoulder content produced by Eurovision Sport - the EBU’s free-to-air streaming service - will be available to members throughout the tournament. This additional content provides an extra access point for fans and supplements traditional broadcasts.
The WEURO 2025 is set to run from July 2-27, across eight venues in eight cities in Switzerland. The host country was confirmed back in April of 2023.
Prominent EBU members that will broadcast the tournament include Germany’s ZDF, Belgium’s RTB, Croatia’s HRT, Austria’s ORF, host nation Switzerland’s SRG and SSR along with UK's BBC and ITV.
Extensive coverage expected in the UK
Given England's status as defending European champions and one of the favorites entering into WEURO 2025; Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland still having chances to qualify; coupled with impressive viewing figures for previous women's football events like Women's World Cup held in 2023; it is expected that ITV and BBC coverage in UK would be extensive.
BBC plans on broadcasting through its linear channels and iPlayer OTT service, while ITV will broadcast on its ITV1 and ITV4 channels as well as the ITVX platform.
This deal between EBU and UEFA is a significant step towards promoting women's football across Europe. With extensive coverage planned across multiple platforms, fans can look forward to enjoying every moment of WEURO 2025. The tournament promises to be an exciting event for sports fans and sports betting enthusiasts.
