Cristiano Ronaldo, one of the most celebrated footballers in history, recently shared his thoughts on Manchester City's chances of winning the UEFA Champions League again this season. Despite acknowledging their potential to clinch victory, he expressed a personal hope that they would not.
Manchester City emerged victorious in last year's Champions League final by defeating Inter Milan 1-0. They are now aiming to become only the second team to win the tournament in consecutive campaigns since its rebranding as UCL in 1992.
Ronaldo himself was part of a Real Madrid side that achieved an impressive feat by winning three consecutive titles between 2016 and 2018. His insights into such achievements lend weight to his predictions about Manchester City.
These comments were made during an on-stage Q&A session at Friday's Globe Soccer Awards held in Dubai. Ruben Dias and Kyle Walker, two key players from the Manchester City squad, were also present when Ronaldo was asked about their European chances this season.
Cristiano Ronaldo, Al Nassr forward, said:
"I think they have the potential to do it the same. I hope not. But they have potential.
"They still have a good team. Some players are in their prime. They play good football. I think they have a good chance to win the Champions League again. But we will see. Many factors will happen."
Man City and Real Madrid are top contenders for Champions League title
Both Manchester City and Real Madrid had stellar performances during the group stage with each securing a perfect score of 18 points.
Looking ahead at the round of 16 matches, Man City is set to face Copenhagen while Real Madrid will meet RB Leipzig. Interestingly enough, Copenhagen qualified for this knockout phase by finishing above one of Ronaldo’s former clubs - Manchester United - in Group A.
The Danish club had mixed fortunes against United; they lost 1-0 at Old Trafford but managed an exciting home victory with a scoreline reading 4-3 which eventually led them to finish second in their group while United ended up last.
While Cristiano Ronaldo tips Man City as capable contenders for the Champions League title, he also expressed a hope that his prediction would be proven wrong. As the tournament progresses, it remains to be seen whether Manchester City will indeed secure another victory or if Ronaldo's hopes will come to fruition. Regardless of the outcome, this season promises to deliver thrilling matches and unexpected surprises for sports fans and sports betting enthusiasts alike.
