The Principality Stadium, known for hosting significant events, is set to be the venue for the inaugural match of Euro 2028

Football fans and sports betting enthusiasts, brace yourselves for a change of scenery. This year, the Community Shield will be held in Cardiff due to Wembley Stadium hosting concerts by Canadian pop star, The Weeknd.

The annual match between the Premier League champions and FA Cup winners is traditionally played at Wembley. However, this year the national stadium will be unavailable on 16 August due to a series of concerts by The Weeknd. Known for his electrifying performance at the Super Bowl in 2021, the pop sensation has booked five dates at Wembley from 14 August through 19 August.

With Wembley out of commission for football during that period, the Community Shield will return to its temporary home from years past - The Principality Stadium. Formerly known as Millennium Stadium, it hosted six Community Shields between 2001 and 2006 while Wembley was under construction. The Principality Stadium is no stranger to high-profile events; it's slated as host venue for Euro 2028’s opening match. This prestigious tournament is being co-hosted by England, Republic of Ireland, Scotland and Wales.

History of venue changes

Since returning to its traditional home ground at Wembley in 2007 after renovations were completed there, this marks only the third time that the Community Shield has had to move venues. It was relocated once before in recent history - first moved over Villa Park in Birmingham back in 2012 because of London Olympics interference with scheduling; then again last year when King Power Stadium hosted it while Women's European Championship final took place at national stadium.

In a thrilling recap from last year’s eventful game – FA Cup holders Crystal Palace emerged victorious in the 2025 Community Shield, beating Premier League champions Liverpool 3-2 on penalties. This year's match promises to be just as exciting, even with the change of venue.

While the shift from Wembley to Cardiff may be a surprise for some fans and bettors alike, it is not unprecedented. The Community Shield has proven its adaptability over time and continues to deliver thrilling football action regardless of location. As we look forward to this year's match-up in Cardiff, let’s remember that no matter where it’s played – it’s all about the beautiful game.
