Fabregas thinks Lopetegui can bring long due success at London Stadium

Former Arsenal and Chelsea midfielder, Cesc Fabregas, has shared his thoughts on the appointment of Julen Lopetegui as the new manager of West Ham. According to him, despite initial skepticism from fans, Lopetegui has what it takes to succeed at the London Stadium.

Fabregas expressed his confidence in Lopetegui during a recent episode of BBC’s Planet Premier League podcast. He highlighted that the Spanish coach has proven himself to be a "good coach" through his successful stints at Sevilla and Wolves.

However, he also cautioned that there would be a period of adaptation required for West Ham’s players who are accustomed to a different style under former manager David Moyes.

Lopetegui need to win fans first

Despite Fabregas's endorsement, it is clear that Lopetegui still has some convincing to do among West Ham supporters. The fanbase was notably disappointed when it was announced that the Hammers had chosen Lopetegui as Moyes’ successor.

Cesc Fabregas, Chelsea legend, said:

“He’s had success, obviously. All that mess that happened in the Spanish national team when he signed for Real Madrid – they kicked him out before the World Cup but when Real Madrid signs obviously something is good around you. His Sevilla team for example played quite well – they won the Europa League playing some good football.”

“At Wolves, I think he did a good job – especially in the first year. Creating a good dynamic, a very good brand of football and getting them away from the relegation zone. He’s definitely a coach that has very clear ideas of what he wants to do – he’s had success a couple of times where he’s been.

“I think he could be good – but again, he plays a different style than what West Ham have done for the last couple of years.”

Many fans were hoping for an appointment with more star power. Names like ex-Chelsea coach Thomas Tuchel, former Bayern Munich manager Hansi Flick and Sporting Lisbon boss Ruben Amorim were all reportedly considered but ultimately passed over in favor of Lopetegui.

Challenging road ahead awaits Lopetegui

While Fabregas believes in his fellow Spaniard's ability to succeed at West Ham based on past performances with Sevilla and Wolves, he acknowledges there will be challenges ahead. Not only will there be an adjustment period for players used to Moyes' style but winning over skeptical fans will also prove crucial for success.

While this may not have been the most popular choice among fans initially, Lopetegui's track record suggests he could well prove the doubters wrong. Only time will tell if this gamble pays off for West Ham.
