Brazil-based YouTube channel, Canal Goat, has successfully acquired rights to South American soccer’s major club competitions in 55 countries. This significant deal was struck with the Conmebol governing body and includes broadcasting rights for the elite Copa Libertadores, secondary Copa Sudamericana, and Recopa Sudamericana matches.
The agreement will see these prestigious football competitions broadcast across Europe, Asia, Africa, and Oceania. The coverage extends to major markets such as the United Kingdom, Japan, Ireland, France and Belgium. All matches will be broadcast through Canal Goat’s official YouTube channel with coverage provided in Portuguese.
Canal Goat's coverage debuted with the first leg of this season's Recopa - an annual competition contested by the previous year’s Copa Libertadores and Copa Sudamericana winners. The match saw Argentina’s Lanus take a 1-0 lead against Brazilian giants Flamengo. The second leg is set to take place in Brazil on February 27.
Upcoming matches
Both the Copa Libertadores and Copa Sudamericana are currently in their qualifying phase; however fans can look forward to more action as the group stage of both competitions is set to begin in March.
The countries included in Canal Goat's deal are spread across multiple continents. In Asia, the agreement covers Vietnam, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Cambodia, Laos, Maldives, Mongolia, Myanmar, Nepal, North Korea, Pakistan Philippines South Korea Sri Lanka Thailand East Timor Malaysia Brunei Armenia Kazakhstan Kyrgyzstan Tajikistan Turkmenistan Uzbekistan and India.
Moving to Europe the deal includes Andorra Estonia Latvia Lithuania Albania Hungary Liechtenstein Luxembourg Malta Romania San Marino Belarus and Moldova. Lastly in Oceania it encompasses Fiji Kiribati Marshall Islands Micronesia Nauru Palau Papua New Guinea Samoa Solomon Islands Tonga and Tuvalu. With this deal, Conmebol claims that Copa Libertadores, Copa Sudamericana, and Recopa Sudamericana matches will now be shown in a total of 194 countries globally.
Canal Goat's strategic growth
Since its launch in 2023, Canal Goat has been strategically building out its rights portfolio with a particular focus on soccer. It picked up rights to show the latter stages of the Copa Libertadores and Copa Sudamericana in the UK, Ireland and Japan. The platform also broadcasts Brazil's state championships internationally and recently renewed its deal to show Germany’s top-flight Bundesliga in Brazil.
Canal Goat's rights stable since launching has also featured the Saudi Pro League, Brazil’s third-tier Série C do Brasileirão, the Copa Argentina domestic cup competition, and the Campeonato Brasileiro de Futebol Americano American football league.
This latest acquisition further cements Canal Goat's position as an emerging player in sports broadcasting. With an ever-expanding portfolio of international sports coverage rights under their belt, they are set to bring more diverse sporting events to fans across continents.
