Aston Villa reportedly looking to snap Kalvin Phillips from Cityzens

Aston Villa has reportedly submitted a loan offer for Manchester City midfielder, Kalvin Phillips. The 28-year-old player is seeking a move away from the Premier League champions, with Everton also expressing interest in signing him.

Phillips joined Man City from Leeds United in 2022 for £45 million but has struggled to make an impact under manager Pep Guardiola. He has made only 31 appearances since his arrival, starting just 14 games. His lackluster performance led to a loan spell at West Ham during the second half of last season where he continued to struggle and was eventually dropped from the team.

These poor performances resulted in him missing out on Gareth Southgate’s Euro 2024 squad, despite previously playing a vital role for his country.

Aston Villa's midfield hunt

Aston Villa is currently looking to bolster their midfield after securing the £50 million signing of Amadou Onana from Everton earlier this summer. However, they face stiff competition from Everton who are also keen on acquiring Phillips' services.

Man City and Phillips both agree that a permanent move would be best for all parties involved. Despite this mutual agreement, Man City is open to accepting loan offers if necessary.

Potential departure from Etihad

Reports revealed on July 21 that Man City would accept offers of £20 million for Kalvin Phillips - marking a significant loss compared to his initial transfer fee of £45 million when he moved from Leeds United in 2022. This willingness indicates both parties' desire for change and could potentially see Philips leave Etihad permanently this summer.

It remains uncertain where Kalvin Philips will land next season as both Aston Villa and Everton vie for his signature. Regardless of where he ends up though, it seems clear that Philips needs fresh surroundings and a new challenge to reignite his career.
