Slot thinks first match was just to regain match fitness for players

Despite a 1-0 defeat in the Preston North End match in a behind-closed-doors preseason match, Liverpool's coach, Arne Slot, remains optimistic about the team's performance and potential. The Reds' first preseason game may not have ended with the desired result, but it offered some valuable insights and takeaways.

Liverpool faced off against Preston North End on Friday in their first preseason match. The Reds found themselves up against a team that was already deeper into their preseason training and felt the impact of this disparity on the pitch. Preston emerged victorious from this clash thanks to an impressive goal by Robbie Brady - their only shot on goal throughout the game. This led to a 1-0 win over Liverpool.

While not an ideal start for Liverpool, there were still some positives to be drawn from this encounter. It wasn't so much about winning or losing; rather, it was an opportunity for players to regain competitive fitness after a long break.

Arne Slot’s positive takeaway

The Liverpool manager Slot had some encouraging words post-match despite the loss. He acknowledged that while they didn't achieve the desired result, he saw elements of play that he wanted his team to exhibit.

Arne Slot, Liverpool manager, said:

“Yes, yes, definitely [I saw my ideas out there], I’ve seen this a lot during the training sessions – maybe a bit more than today – but that also had to do with the playing style of the opponent. Like I said, we controlled the game completely, we only conceded one shot. The bad thing about it was that that shot went in, [it was] a great goal, though.

“We had some good build-up moments, had some good chances in the first half as well. Second half, I didn’t think we created that much, which is normal because there were a lot of young players in the team who didn’t play in their own positions sometimes as well. So, we couldn’t have asked for more from the boys in the first two weeks – [they have] worked really hard, tried to implement ideas and it’s not that we only bring new ideas. There are a lot of things that have been done here that were really good. So, like I said, a bit unlucky to lose 1-0 if you only conceded one shot.”

Arne Slot emphasized that there is more growth expected from his team as they adapt to new strategies and tactics quickly. His hope is that these positive changes will become more evident as his squad participates in friendlies over the next month leading up to season kick-off.

Long pre-season awaits

The ultimate test of these early stages will come in the Liverpool vs Ipswich match at season kick-off. The focus now is less on past results and more on demonstrating what they are truly capable of when it matters most – during official matches in front of thousands of fans worldwide.

While defeats are never easy pills to swallow, they can often provide valuable lessons and insights. For Liverpool, this preseason defeat against Preston North End has given them a chance to identify areas of improvement and work on them before the season officially begins.

With Arne Slot's positive outlook and the team's quick adaptation to new strategies, Liverpool fans have every reason to look forward to an exciting season ahead.
