In a groundbreaking move, Apple TV has utilized the iPhone 17 Pro Max to capture an entire Major League Soccer (MLS) match. This innovative approach marks the first time a smartphone has been used to shoot a professional live sporting event broadcast.
The MLS match between Los Angeles Galaxy and Houston Dynamo, which took place on Saturday, May 23rd, was captured entirely using iPhone 17 Pro Max devices. The behind-the-scenes footage reveals how this feat was achieved and showcases the impressive capabilities of these smartphones.
Apple's MLS Instagram account shared glimpses of the process by posting a short clip showing an iPhone 17 Pro Max in action during the game. However, it was US content creator Brian Tong who provided more comprehensive insights into this revolutionary broadcasting method through his YouTube video.
Behind-the-Scenes
Tong's video shows multiple iPhone 17 Pro Max phones strategically placed around Dignity Sports Health Park in Carson, California - both on the pitch and in the stands. Some of these devices were capturing imagery directly from their camera lenses while others were hooked up to Fujifilm Fujinon broadcast lenses.
This setup mirrors traditional broadcasting methods where much bulkier and expensive systems cameras are used for live sports coverage. However, by using iPhones instead of conventional equipment, Apple TV managed to streamline its operations without compromising quality. All phone feeds from these iPhones were sent directly to an OB truck stationed at the stadium for real-time processing and broadcasting. To ensure optimal performance during recording, all fifteen phones ran on Blackmagic Camera App while recording in Apple Log 2 at a resolution of 1080p60.
This innovative use of technology not only demonstrates how far smartphones have come but also opens up new possibilities for future sports broadcasts. By leveraging advanced mobile technology, sports broadcasters can potentially reduce costs and logistical challenges associated with traditional broadcasting equipment. Apple TV's successful experiment of capturing an entire MLS match using iPhone 17 Pro Max devices marks a significant milestone in sports broadcasting. It showcases the potential of smartphones as viable tools for professional live event coverage, paving the way for more innovative and cost-effective solutions in the future. This is indeed exciting news for both sports fans and sports betting fans who can look forward to more accessible and high-quality broadcasts.
