Postecoglou says trophies can’t define manager’s success

Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou has recently voiced his opinion on the criteria for judging a manager's success, insisting that trophies alone do not necessarily reflect a job well done. This perspective comes in stark contrast to Erik ten Hag's theory, which places significant emphasis on trophy wins.

Postecoglou is set to lead his Tottenham side against Manchester United in an upcoming showdown that could potentially place the losing team in the bottom half of the Premier League table. On one side of this impending clash is Dutchman Ten Hag, who is currently battling to retain his position as United boss.

Ten Hag famously declared after last season's FA Cup final that he identifies as a winner and would seek opportunities elsewhere if he wasn't appreciated at Old Trafford. However, Postecoglu, who has been tasked with ending Spurs' silverware drought dating back to 2008, holds a different viewpoint.

Trophies vs Performance

According to Postecoglu, while trophies are indeed important markers of success for any football club or manager, they should not be considered as the sole yardstick for measuring managerial performance or effectiveness. He believes there are other aspects such as player development and team cohesion which also play crucial roles in determining whether a manager is doing their job well.

Ange Postecoglu, Spurs manager, said:

"He keeps mentioning he's won two trophies and everyone keeps telling me that's all I have to do, but it's not because when you do that there's always more. If Erik hadn’t won anything last year, they would be saying he’s just got to win something and everything will be all right.

"That’s why I rail against it because it’s a trap you can fall into, thinking 'all I have to do is win something and everyone is going to love me and think I’m doing a great job'. That doesn’t exist. That’s why I keep saying the focus is on trying to build a group that can have the opportunity to have sustainable success. You need to do that because success isn’t guaranteed.

"If you can create something that gives you the opportunity for it on a year-on-year basis, then you’ve got more chance of creating a period where the club can undeniably see itself as a contender."

Uncertain future for Heung-min Son

In other news related to Tottenham Hotspur FC, South Korean striker Heung-min Son’s future at the club remains uncertain due to an expiring contract at season’s end and recent injury concerns. Son picked up a hamstring problem during Thursday’s 3-0 Europa League victory over Qarabag which puts him in doubt ahead of their next match.

Despite these challenges and being 32 years old - typically considered autumn years for footballers - Heung-min Son continues to be a valuable asset for the club. Postecoglou has expressed his desire for Son to extend his contract, stating that he wants his captain to sign on for at least another campaign. However, Postecoglou also respects Son's international commitments and will not ask him to prioritize club over country in order to prolong his career.

As the football world continues its debate over what constitutes managerial success, Postecoglu's perspective offers a refreshing take. While trophies are undeniably important, they are not the only measure of success. As sports fans and sports betting enthusiasts watch this space closely, it will be interesting to see how these differing viewpoints play out in the upcoming showdown between Tottenham and Manchester United.
