Bournemouth midfielder, Alex Scott, is on the brink of making his international debut for England in the upcoming World Cup warm-up games set to take place in the United States.
Scott, along with Rio Ngumoha, Josh King, Jason Steele and Ethan Nwaneri have been selected as supplementary members of the England squad. They are currently at a preparation camp in Florida awaiting the arrival of four Arsenal players - Declan Rice, Bukayo Saka, Eberechi Eze and Noni Madueke - and Crystal Palace goalkeeper Dean Henderson. These players' arrivals have been delayed due to their involvement in European finals.
Henderson is expected within 24 hours while the remaining four are scheduled to report for duty over the weekend. Despite not being included in Thomas Tuchel's full squad for the World Cup, all five additional selections are eligible to participate in friendly matches against New Zealand and Costa Rica. The quintet will remain at Florida throughout their training camp duration instead of returning when other players report for duty.
Potential breakthrough into full squad
Scott was previously named as part of Tuchel's provisional 55-man squad for this tournament. This implies that among these five supplementary players only he has a potential chance of breaking into full World Cup squad should any injuries occur during this period. The 22-year-old player thus stands a strong chance to make his international debut during one of these forthcoming friendlies before heading off on his summer break.
Thomas Tuchel, England manager, said:
"I'm really happy these guys are with us, especially Alex, who was with us in the list of 55 and had a kind of disappointing phone call as well, that he didn't make the first cut. But the reaction of him was outstanding, the commitment, the wish to be in pre-camp and to just be a step closer to the team was not even a question for him.
"He showed me his character and his spirit so I'm delighted that he's with us because it was a close call."
Scott received his first senior call-up last November for matches against Serbia and Albania but did not get an opportunity to play. Subsequently, Tuchel left him out from squads facing Japan and Uruguay earlier this year before omitting him from his final 26-man party chosen specifically for the World Cup. This upcoming opportunity for Scott to make his debut in the friendlies is a significant moment that could potentially open doors for his future involvement in England's international football scene.
