Villarreal vs Manchester United Prediction
Tip: Result - Draw/Both Teams To Score
Key Points:
1. No team has drawn more domestic games in Europe's top five leagues than Villarreal.
2. Both teams have scored in United’s last eight Champions League matches.
3. Four of the last five UCL meetings between the two sides have ended in a draw.
Things are very tight in Champions League Group F as Villarreal welcome Manchester United to El Madrigal just days after the visitors sacked former manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. An already horrible start to the season for The Red Devils was made worse at the weekend as they slumped to a 4-1 defeat away at Watford. That was too much for the United board to take and the Norwegian was dismissed, with Michael Carrick put in temporary charge of the team as the hunt for a new manager begins.
Hosts Villarreal ground out a 1-1 draw away at mid table rivals Celta Vigo at the weekend putting their tally of draws to seven. No team in Europe's top five leagues has drawn more domestic league games this season than The Yellow Submarine. Their inability to convert draws into wins in La Liga has put some pressure on coach Unai Emery but he is understood to have the confidence of the club's ownership, at least for now.
Despite enduring middling to poor form in their respective leagues, both sides have found the Champions League to be a slightly safer place. After a shock defeat against Young Boys, United have bounced back to claim seven points from three games. The hosts are joint top on the same number of points after securing back-to-back wins over Young Boys and a 2-2 draw with Atalanta.
Both teams have scored in three of Villarreal's four group games with the only exception being their 2-0 win over Young Boys. Both teams have scored in United's last eight Champions League matches, and six of their last nine matches in all competitions this season. Both Teams To Score seems to be a pretty safe bet for this match.
A draw also looks quite likely given the historical record between the two, how evenly matched they were in the Europa League final in May, in which they could only be separated after 21 penalties, and in their earlier group game in this year's Champions League which was set to finish in a 1-1 draw before Cristiano Ronaldo scored in the 95th minute.
Both Teams To Score is the closest thing you'll see to a banker in this match and given Villarreal's penchant for draws and United's inability to kill off games, barring another last minute feat of heroism from Ronaldo, the points are likely to be shared here.
