AC Monza sporting director, Nicolas Burdisso, has expressed his interest in signing Manchester City loanee and Argentinian attacker, Claudio Echeverri. This comes after the young player found his footing at Girona following a challenging stint at Bayer Leverkusen.
Echeverri's journey to the top of European football has been anything but smooth. After only three appearances for Manchester City, he was sent on loan to Germany. His time at Bayer Leverkusen proved difficult as he struggled to secure regular playing time.
During the 2025/26 Bundesliga season, Echeverri only played 270 minutes across 11 appearances and was often left on the bench. He was an unused substitute in seven out of thirteen games where he was available.
Turning point
In January of that season, Kasper Hjulmand – Bayer Leverkusen manager – agreed with Manchester City officials to terminate Echeverri’s loan agreement earlier than planned. This decision led him back into the arms of the City Football Group (CFG) as he moved to Spain and joined Girona. This move proved beneficial for Echeverri as it allowed him more frequent playtime and a chance to regain his confidence on the field. Since joining Girona, he made 17 La Liga appearances scoring once and assisting another goal against Athletic Club in March.
According to Italian reports from Gianluca Di Marzio, AC Monza is keenly observing this rising talent with plans of bringing him onboard this summer. The increase in his playing minutes coupled with improved performances have sparked interest from several parts of Europe including Serie A club AC Monza. Another loan move seems beneficial for Echeverri, given his current form and the gradual increase in his playing time across Europe. This situation presents a complex decision regarding his future with Manchester City.
While it remains uncertain where Echeverri will end up next season, one thing is clear: if he continues to gain elite-level experience and maintains his current trajectory, he could evolve into the player that Manchester City believed they were signing back in 2025. Claudio Echeverri's journey serves as a testament to the resilience and determination required in professional football. His story also highlights how loan moves can provide young players with valuable opportunities to develop their skills and build confidence on an international stage.
