James Maddison needs to find form to revive Tottenham Hotspur after bad start

Former Arsenal player, Paul Merson, has urged Tottenham star James Maddison to elevate his game following a lackluster performance in the recent match against Arsenal. Despite facing an Arsenal team without key players Declan Rice and Martin Odegaard, Spurs were unable to secure a win and were ultimately defeated by Gabriel’s second-half header.

Tottenham's inability to find a breakthrough during the match was starkly contrasted with their previously free-flowing start under manager Ange Postecoglou. The disappointing performance led Merson to call on key players to take responsibility for their actions on the pitch.

Maddison, in particular, was singled out by Merson as needing improvement. The 27-year-old midfielder has managed only two assists this season and is yet to score any goals. This is a significant drop from his electric form seen before he suffered a lengthy ankle injury midway through last season.

A closer look at Maddison's performance

Maddison's current form is far from satisfactory considering his potential and past performances. His lack of goals this season raises concerns about his ability to contribute effectively towards Spurs' attacking strategy.

Former Arsenal player, Paul Merson, said:

‘James Maddison wasn’t great on Sunday, he has got to step up. He’s got to be better. He’s playing in a position where you’ve got to make things happen, I don’t personally think he did that on Sunday and looking at who he was playing up against, he has to be better.

‘I’m not digging him out because I’m a huge fan of his, but I’ve played that position and know that he needs to do better.’

However, despite these criticisms, Merson remains optimistic about Postecoglou’s side. He believes that if they can improve in one key area - presumably their attacking prowess - they will be able to regain their stride and return stronger than ever.

Spurs' upcoming matches

In light of recent events, Tottenham will be looking forward to getting back on track when they face Championship club Coventry City in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday. This upcoming match provides an excellent opportunity for Maddison and other players who have been underperforming recently to step up their game and prove themselves worthy of wearing the Spurs jersey.

While the recent defeat against Arsenal was a setback for Tottenham, it also serves as a wake-up call for key players like Maddison. With Merson's constructive criticism and Postecoglou’s guidance, there is hope that Spurs can turn their fortunes around in the upcoming matches.
