Arsenal fans were left in suspense when Declan Rice, a key player for the team, hobbled off the field during their opening Premier League match against Wolverhampton Wanderers. However, Mikel Arteta, Arsenal manager has provided an update that should alleviate concerns about Rice's fitness.
During the 85th minute of the game, England international Declan Rice clutched his calf and was escorted off by Arsenal’s medical staff. At this point in time, Arsenal was already leading with a score of 2-0 at Emirates Stadium thanks to goals from Kai Havertz and Bukayo Saka.
As the match neared its end, Rice took to the turf where Havertz initially stretched out his leg before Arsenal’s physios came onto pitch to administer treatment. Following this incident, Gabriel Jesus was substituted on as a replacement for the 25-year-old midfielder.
Arteta alleviates fears over injury
Despite initial concerns over what appeared to be an injury scare for one of their star players, it seems there is little reason for worry. According to Arteta’s update post-match: "Rice was suffering from cramp." He attributed this issue to limited pre-season preparation that had been available for his star player.
Mikel Arteta, Arsenal manager, said:
"Yeah he was cramping, He hasn’t had the longest pre-season ever. But he was really trying and he put an unbelievable performance again. At the end he was struggling a bit."
Arteta also expressed admiration towards his players' commitment towards returning back into action despite having limited breaks due to their participation in Euro 2024 held in Germany. Players like Rice himself along with Saka and David Raya competed until final moments at Euro 2024 which resulted in them having less time off than usual.
"I’m not surprised," said Arteta while paying tribute to their efforts and highlighting their desire even preparing for season while they were on holiday.
Arsenal looking for a strong start
Arteta expects that Rice will be fit in time for Arsenal's next match, which will be their first away game of the Premier League season. The Gunners are set to face former manager Unai Emery at Villa Park next Saturday.
Last season, Arsenal slipped up twice against Champions League qualifiers and tasted defeat both at home and away. However, Arteta remains hopeful of improving Arsenal's points tally by rectifying these past mistakes this season.
While the sight of Declan Rice leaving the field may have initially caused concern among fans and teammates alike, Mikel Arteta’s update has provided a sense of relief. With his expected return in the upcoming matches, fans can look forward to seeing Rice back on the field soon.
