Many Premier League clubs have been interested in Giorgio Scalvini, but after Spurs closed on Radu Dragusin, United have emerged as the favorites

Manchester United, the Premier League giants, are reportedly keen on signing a central defender in the ongoing January transfer window. The Red Devils' performance in the 2023-24 season has been less than stellar, prompting them to look for reinforcements this winter.

According to reports from Italy, Manchester United is leading the race to sign Atalanta centre-back Giorgio Scalvini. The 20-year-old Italian star has a £43.5 million release clause in his current contract with Atalanta as per Nacional - an amount that Manchester United is prepared to pay.

Atalanta appears ready to accept this sum for their young defender who still has over four years remaining on his contract. However, other European heavyweights such as Tottenham Hotspur, Chelsea, Inter Milan, Juventus and Real Madrid are also reportedly keeping tabs on Scalvini.

As injuries increase and players like Varane's future uncertain, Erik ten Hag desperately needs to add to his defensive arsenal

Erik ten Hag's team have faced significant defensive challenges this season due largely to multiple injuries among key players in his backline. Currently sidelined due to injuries in the Manchester United squad are Lisandro Martinez, Harry Maguire, Victor Lindelof and Raphael Varane.

The addition of Scalvini could provide much-needed stability and strength at the heart of their defence as they aim for a stronger second half of the season.

Scalvini is no stranger when it comes down to experience despite being only 20 years old. He has made 75 appearances across competitions for Atalanta's senior squad and represented Italy national team seven times already.

His impressive performances both domestically and internationally have caught attention far beyond Italy’s borders making him one of Europe’s most sought-after defenders currently available on market.

The potential addition of Scalvini to Manchester United's roster could be a game-changer for the team, providing much-needed reinforcement in their defence. With other European giants also eyeing the young Italian star, it remains to be seen where Scalvini will land. However, if Manchester United successfully triggers his release clause, it could mark a significant turning point in their season.
