Manchester United senior executives are expected to recommend former midfielder, Michael Carrick, as the permanent boss to Sir Jim Ratcliffe. This decision comes after a successful period with Carrick as caretaker head coach, which saw the team secure qualification for next season's Champions League.
Carrick, 44, has been viewed as a favourite for the job since he successfully guided United from seventh to third in the Premier League table and secured a return to the Champions League. Since his appointment on 13 January, no Premier League club has won more points than Manchester United's 33 under Carrick's leadership.
The former midfielder oversaw victories over title contenders Manchester City and Arsenal during his first four matches in charge. Despite an unbeaten run ending in March, key victories over Champions League rivals Aston Villa, Chelsea and Liverpool ensured a return to Europe's elite club competition.
From disarray to stability
United was in disarray when Ruben Amorim was dismissed due to poor results and disagreements over tactics and formation. This led to an increasingly strained relationship with club officials towards the end of his 14-month tenure.
However, Carrick has steadied the ship impressively both on and off pitch since taking charge. He had previously had a three-game stint as United’s temporary boss after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s dismissal in 2021.
Carrick is not only making waves with match results but also behind-the-scenes at Old Trafford. He has been praised internally for his commitment towards youth development programmes at Manchester United. His long-term view on decisions involving recruitment further demonstrates his dedication towards building a strong future for the team - something that hasn't gone unnoticed by players who have called for him being given full-time responsibility.
Other options considered
United have been assessing other options, but some, such as England boss Thomas Tuchel, have decided to stay where they are. Luis Enrique also remains committed to PSG. This leaves Carrick as a strong contender for the permanent position.
The final decision now lies with minority shareholder Sir Jim Ratcliffe. If he agrees with the recommendation of external chief executive Omar Berrada and director of football Jason Wilcox, formal talks will begin with Carrick before his future is confirmed. Carrick's side concludes their 2025-26 campaign with fixtures against Nottingham Forest at Old Trafford on Sunday, 17 May and a final-day trip to Brighton on 24 May.
Michael Carrick's impressive tenure as caretaker head coach has put him in pole position for the permanent job at Manchester United. His commitment towards youth development and long-term planning has won him praise from within the club and players alike.
