McTominay is all set to leave Old Trafford to make space for Manuel Ugarte

Manchester United has agreed in principle to sell Scotland midfielder, Scott McTominay, to Napoli. The 2023 Serie A champions have offered a fee of around €30m (£25m) for the player. However, the completion of this deal hinges on McTominay's agreement to personal terms and his decision to leave Old Trafford.

McTominay has been associated with Manchester United since he joined their academy over a decade ago before signing officially in 2013. Since then, he has made 255 appearances for the club and scored 29 goals. Despite being featured as a substitute in all three games this season, his potential move away from Old Trafford could mark an end of an era.

Potential replacement

If McTominay decides to leave, it is speculated that the proceeds from his sale could be used towards a bid for Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Manuel Ugarte. The Uruguay international is reportedly their top midfield target this summer. However, there seems to be some disagreement between both clubs regarding Ugarte's value.

As a homegrown player at Manchester United, any fee received from McTominay’s transfer would count as pure profit in PSR accounts which could significantly boost their financial standing.

Previous offers and future prospects

Earlier this summer, Fulham had shown interest in acquiring McTominay but were turned down by Manchester United who were holding out for a higher fee for the Scotland international.

Last year also saw interest from other clubs including West Ham but despite these offers and scoring a career-best ten goals last season; McTominay chose to stay at Old Trafford. With him entering into the last year of his contract (though there is an option available for extension by another year), Manchester United seems more open to offers now.

The potential transfer of Scott McTominay from Manchester United to Napoli could be a significant move in the football world. It not only marks the end of a long-standing association but also opens up opportunities for new players like Manuel Ugarte. However, the final decision rests with McTominay who must decide whether he is ready to leave Old Trafford and start a new chapter in his career at Napoli.
