Manchester City's initial offer for midfielder Elliot Anderson has been turned down by Nottingham Forest, marking the beginning of what could be a significant transfer saga.
BBC Sport reported last week that the 23-year-old England international is leaning towards a move to Etihad Stadium over Manchester United. This news comes amidst growing expectations that Anderson will leave the City Ground this summer. The Athletic confirmed that Manchester City has now formalised their interest, although their first bid was rejected.
Anderson had an exceptional season with Forest and earned his place in Thomas Tuchel's England squad for the World Cup. His potential transfer fee could set a new record for a British player, surpassing the £105m Arsenal paid West Ham for Declan Rice in 2023.
Long-time admiration and future plans
Manchester City have long admired Newcastle academy graduate Anderson. Despite currently preparing for the tournament in North America, club-to-club discussions about his future can continue.
The departure of captain Bernardo Silva means Manchester City are looking to strengthen their midfield, with Anderson topping their list of potential targets. Newcastle midfielder Sandro Tonali is another player believed to be highly rated by City as they consider him as a long-term target. Nico Gonzalez may depart if he receives an attractive offer after missing out on Spain’s World Cup squad and falling out of favour under Pep Guardiola last season.
City are also reportedly interested in signing a right-back to supplement Matheus Nunes who excelled this season after being converted from midfield into this position. They are particularly interested in young full-backs who naturally fit into this role and can develop further over time. While it remains uncertain whether or not Elliot Anderson will make his move from Nottingham Forest to Manchester city, one thing is clear: Manchester City are determined to bolster their squad and are willing to invest heavily in the right talent.
