Manchester United legends, Rio Ferdinand and Ryan Giggs, have recently sparked a debate among football fans. They believe that Jack Grealish, the current Manchester City winger, would have been a better fit for their former club.
Grealish joined Manchester City from Aston Villa in 2021 with a hefty transfer fee of £100 million. Since then, he has made 155 appearances for the club. Despite his impressive record and three Premier League titles to his name along with Champions League, FA Cup and Club World Cup victories; Ferdinand and Giggs feel that Grealish's talents would be better utilized at Old Trafford.
Struggling to live up to expectations
The England star arrived at City on the back of some red-hot form for Villa but has struggled to live up to his transfer fee. His attacking output hasn't found consistency despite having 17 goals and 23 assists altogether under his belt.
This season has been particularly challenging for him as he managed only one goal and assist in 19 Premier League matches. The situation led him out of Pep Guardiola’s starting XI which further fueled speculations about his future at the club.
Potential loan move?
Recent reports suggest that Grealish could be made available for loan during the summer transfer window due to these struggles. This news comes as an interesting development considering he still has two years left on his contract with Man City. Ryan Giggs is considered one of the best left wingers in Premier League history. He feels that Grealish would have been better off playing for United rather than City. Ferdinand echoed this sentiment by saying: “I loved him.” When Giggs compared Grealish's situation with being a "United player", Ferdinand agreed wholeheartedly stating “Yeah, 100 per cent. He’s got the… [he just] wants it, innit?”
Grealish himself has been open about his struggles for consistency and a place in the starting XI. His current situation at Manchester City is a stark contrast to his time at Aston Villa where he was a key player.
While Grealish's transfer to Manchester City was seen as a major coup for the club, it seems that not everyone agrees with this sentiment. The debate initiated by Ferdinand and Giggs adds another layer of intrigue to Grealish's future in football. Whether or not he would have been better off at United is subjective but one thing is clear - Jack Grealish still has much more to offer on the pitch.
