Liverpool Football Club has announced that it will pay the full contract of its late player, Diogo Jota, to his wife Rute Cardoso. This decision comes after the tragic death of the Portuguese star in a car accident.
Diogo Jota and his brother Andre were killed in a car crash in northern Spain on July 3rd. The incident occurred when the Lamborghini they were driving popped a tyre during an overtaking manoeuvre. This tragedy came just 11 days after Jota's marriage to his childhood sweetheart, Cardoso.
The untimely passing of this beloved footballer has led to an outpouring of grief from Liverpool FC and the wider football community. As everyone grapples with this loss, more importantly, a family is coming to terms with the unimaginable passing of their loved one who leaves behind his wife and three young children.
Liverpool's support for grieving family
On the day of Diogo Jota’s funeral in Gondomar, Portugal, it was reported that Liverpool FC plans not only emotional support but also financial assistance for his grieving family. According to Record, Liverpool FC will honour Jota’s £140k per week contract – which still had two years left – by paying it up in full as a small token of their support for his family during these trying times.
Several grieving teammates have shown their respect and solidarity during this difficult time. Close friend Andy Robertson and club captain Virgil van Dijk were both seen arriving at church carrying red wreaths with No 20 woven into them - signifying Diogo's jersey number at Liverpool FC.
Manager Arne Slot also attended alongside players Joe Gomez, Wataro Endo and Ibrahima Konate; all somberly entering the place of worship to pay their respects.
