As Liverpool FC's season draws to a close, fans may find solace in the fact that the club's behind-the-scenes documentary is still awaiting broadcast. The filming for this addition to the growing collection of football documentaries began in December and was officially announced in January.
The announcement of the Liverpool documentary coincided with news of Jurgen Klopp’s resignation, which sparked a wave of interest among fans. The prospect of a series documenting his final months at Liverpool was met with widespread positivity.
However, as Liverpool's challenge for four trophies crumbled amid a frustrating run-in – including being knocked out of both the Europa League and FA Cup Quarter-Finals – some fans have called for the documentary to be scrapped entirely.
Liverpool holding position in hunt for better offers
Despite these calls, Tom Burrows from The Athletic reports that while ongoing talks with streaming services are taking place, no deal has been struck yet for its broadcast. It was previously reported that Liverpool would seek around £10 million for rights to the documentary produced by Lorton Entertainment.
The plan is to air it in August before launching their new campaign. Drew Crisp, Liverpool’s senior vice-president of digital views it as “a way to boost their huge global reach.”
Drew Crisp, Liverpool senior vice-president, said:
“With this being my final season I thought we should provide a rare opportunity for viewers to have more of an inside look at what makes this club so special: its people.
“From our fans to our players and those who work so hard behind the scenes, constantly in pursuit of success for Liverpool Football Club. Thanks to this new documentary series, viewers will be able to see what I see every day at this great club, and understand those amazing people more.”
Series to give unprecedented access to fans
Interestingly enough, Burrows’ report notes that Klopp granted unprecedented access during production when he invited them into Wembley dressing room during Carabao Cup title celebrations - an opportunity they didn't anticipate when filming began.
However, there have been no such celebrations since then. This suggests that the second half of this multi-episodic series might take on a more somber tone than initially expected.
Speaking on the announcement of this series earlier this year, Jurgen Klopp expressed his excitement about sharing an inside look at their journey through what has proven to be an eventful season. Despite the setbacks, this documentary promises to offer an intimate look into the workings of one of football's most beloved clubs. While fans eagerly await its release, it remains to be seen which streaming service will secure the rights to broadcast this highly anticipated documentary.
