In an unexpected turn of events, Saudi Arabia's World Cup warm-up game against Puerto Rico was interrupted due to extreme weather conditions. The match, held at the Q2 Stadium in Austin, Texas, was halted for nearly two hours as thunderstorms and lightning forced players off the pitch.
The game was stopped in the 21st minute when a series of lightning strikes occurred. Fans were advised to seek shelter immediately. Despite these interruptions, the match eventually resumed with Saudi Arabia emerging victorious with a 3-0 win. The 2026 World Cup is scheduled to start on June 11 and will be hosted across Canada, Mexico and the United States. However, it coincides with peak thunderstorm season in several host cities which could potentially disrupt matches.
If a lightning strike is detected within eight miles of a stadium during any game, it will be stopped immediately. A mandatory countdown of 30 minutes then begins; each subsequent lightning strike within that distance resets this countdown clock back to half an hour. While Q2 Stadium won't host any matches during the World Cup itself, two other stadiums in Texas are set to feature prominently throughout the tournament.
Texan venues prepared for weather conditions
Houston Stadium is slated to hold seven matches while Dallas Stadium will host nine games including England's group game against Croatia. Both venues are equipped with retractable roofs which can mitigate weather impact significantly.
Last year’s Club World Cup held in US saw Chelsea's last-16 tie against Benfica lasting four hours and thirty-nine minutes due to multiple halts caused by seasonal summer thunderstorms - highlighting potential challenges ahead for this year’s tournament organizers. Apart from storms and lightnings strikes there are also concerns about heat levels at various venues during this global event. Researchers have warned that temperatures at 14 of the 16 stadiums being used could exceed dangerous levels.
Saudi Arabia is set to play their final warm-up game against Senegal before they kick off their World Cup campaign against Uruguay at Miami Stadium on June 15. They will then face Spain in Atlanta on June 21 and Cape Verde in Houston on June 27 as part of their Group H matches. While the excitement for the upcoming World Cup is palpable among sports fans worldwide, it's clear that weather conditions could pose significant challenges. However, with adequate precautions and infrastructure in place, it’s hoped these potential disruptions can be minimized to ensure a smooth tournament.
