Despite their recent 2-1 defeat against Newcastle at St James' Park, Redknapp maintains his belief that Manchester City is still in the running for the title

Jamie Redknapp, the renowned Sky Sport pundit, has ruled out Liverpool as title contenders for this season's Premier League. This comes after Arne Slot’s side suffered their sixth league defeat in just 12 matches.

Liverpool recently faced a humiliating 3-0 loss against Sean Dyche‘s Nottingham Forest at Anfield. This defeat has pushed the defending champions to an unsettling 11th position in the league standings. They are now trailing eight points behind current league leaders Arsenal.

Redknapp expressed his views on Sky Sports, stating that despite Liverpool spending approximately £450 million to strengthen their title-winning squad, the new recruits have been underwhelming.

Jamie Redknapp, Sky Sports pundit, said:

“Yeah, look, we can forget Liverpool. They have had a few mentions tonight, but forget Liverpool. They cannot win the Premier League this year. They’re too far gone, confidence is too low, that’ll be a miracle if they did it.”

New recruits fail to impress

Among these new signings are Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz who were both signed for over £100m each. However, neither of them have managed to register a single goal or assist in the league so far.

According to Opta statistics, Liverpool have lost consecutive league games by three goals or more for the first time since April 1965 under Bill Shankly's management.

Defensive woes continue

Only three relegation-threatened sides – Burnley, West Ham and Wolves – have conceded more goals than Liverpool’s tally of 20 this season. This raises serious questions about their defensive strategy and performance.

While Redknapp believes Manchester City are still in contention for the title despite their recent 2-1 loss against Newcastle at St James’ Park, he questioned their porous defence as well.

Jamie Redknapp added:

“What Manchester City have done previously, where they would go on 12 13, 14 game winning runs, is this team capable of doing it? I don’t think so. For Man City, it’s just a case of what else can they win? Because they’ve still got so many things to play for. They’re really exciting side and they’ve got really good players.

“Are they still playing well? Yes, they can play the game like they did against Liverpool where they dispatched them, but I just don’t see this Manchester City side as strong as the previous ones just yet. But they will build and they will definitely get back to that.”

It seems like a miracle would be needed for giants like Liverpool to bounce back into this year's Premier League title race with only twelve games gone so far. The team will need significant improvements both offensively and defensively if they hope to regain momentum and compete for the title.
