Neville recently asserted that Arteta's team has regressed, especially in their recruitment approach since the season's onset

Jamie Carragher, a renowned football pundit, recently made headlines by humorously criticizing his fellow Sky Sports pundit, Gary Neville. This came after Neville was verbally dismantled by another pundit following his bold claim about Arsenal FC.

Neville had appeared on NBC Sports Soccer where he made a controversial statement about Arsenal. He claimed that Mikel Arteta's team has 'gone backwards' since the start of the season, particularly in terms of their recruitment strategy. According to him, they failed to adequately prepare for a likely injury to Kai Havertz - their only centre forward.

Gary Neville, Manchester United legend, said:

"I think they've gone backwards. They've gone backwards, I think, from the start of the season, in terms of their recruitment. They never covered themselves for the likely injury to [Kai] Havertz, who's their only centre forward."

However, this claim did not go unchallenged. Robbie Mustoe disagreed with Neville in an extraordinary fashion which led to Carragher poking fun at Neville’s appearance on American television.

Carragher’s reaction

On the It's Called Soccer podcast, Jamie Carragher shared his thoughts on this incident. Speaking with Rebecca Lowe, he questioned whether Gary had recovered from being 'schooled' by Mustoe and went as far as saying that Neville 'embarrassed us'.

Jamie Carragher, Liverpool legend, said:

"I mean he got absolutely battered didn't he by Robbie Mustoe. I mean he absolutely destroyed him on air,"

"I didn't know if we'd even want him back on Sky. I mean he's gone over there and absolutely embarrassed us. He got absolutely schooled."

Although it seemed like he was speaking in jest when he concluded: "He's gone over there to crack America and he can't even crack Robbie Mustoe."

Contextualizing Arsenal’s performance

Arsenal is set to resume their Premier League campaign against Ipswich Town after securing their spot in the Champions League semi-finals with two impressive displays against Real Madrid which saw them win 5-1 on aggregate.

However, despite these victories at international level competitions, their league campaign has taken a hit due to back-to-back draws against Everton and Brentford. In both matches Arteta’s side drew 1-1; first at Goodison Park then at home against Brentford where Yoane Wissa cancelled out Thomas Partey's strike.

Despite the controversy, both Carragher and Neville are set to return to our screens for Super Sunday. The two televised games will be Ipswich vs. Arsenal and Leicester City vs. Liverpool.
