France defender, Ibrahima Konate, is reportedly in advanced talks with La Liga giants Real Madrid. The potential move could see the player joining the Spanish club on a free transfer.
As reported by the Daily Telegraph, Konate is close to finalizing terms for a move to the Bernabeu. This comes as his contract at Liverpool nears its expiration date at the end of June. On Sunday, Liverpool announced that Konate would be leaving upon completion of his current deal.
The 27-year-old centre-half had previously been engaged in discussions about extending his stay on Merseyside. However, these talks came to an abrupt halt due to disagreements over his value and wages.
Look back at Konate's career at Liverpool
During his tenure with Liverpool, Konate made an impressive 183 appearances across all competitions. His contributions were instrumental in leading the team towards several victories including winning the Premier League title, FA Cup and two League Cups.
If negotiations are successful and he joins Real Madrid this summer, it will make him the second player from Liverpool making such a transition without any transfer fee involved within two successive summers. This follows Trent Alexander-Arnold’s departure last year who also moved from Anfield to Bernabeu for free.
This trend raises questions about whether more players might follow suit and leave their clubs when their contracts expire instead of renewing them or being sold off before they run out. While it may be disappointing news for some fans that another key player is set to leave Anfield without any financial return for their club; others may view this as an exciting opportunity to see Konate in a new setting, playing for one of the world's most prestigious football clubs.
