Can Edin Terzic guide Borussia Dortmund to a piece of silverware before departing at the end of the season

Second tier Holstein Kiel are in the semi finals of the DFB Pokal for the first time since 1941. If they want to make history by reaching a first national final, they will need to get past a Borussia Dortmund side boasting the likes of Erling Haaland and Marco Reus at Signal Iduna Park on Saturday. Anything can happen in a one off tie and that's the beauty of the sport but this will be the toughest task many of their players have ever faced. This fixture will be a repeat of the quarter final between the two back in 2012, in which Dortmund cruised to a 4-0 victory on their way to lifting the trophy under now Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp. This competition is full of history, and without Bayern Munich in sight we are set to see a new champion for the first time in three years.

Dortmund have really turned their form round in recent weeks. Since being knocked out of the Champions League by Manchester City, they've picked up three wins in the league and put themselves right back into the conversation for a top four position. It was only a few weeks ago many were talking about them being too far gone but thanks to slip ups from their rivals and Edin Terzic finally fostering some consistency in the camp, they are looking good for the top four. They will be particularly pleased with their 2-0 victory over third place Wolfsburg in their previous game. A brace from Erling Braut Haaland in that game helped move them to within a point of Eintracht Frankfurt and two points behind Wolfsburg. With three games remaining it is still out of their hands but they have given themselves a great chance to turn a disappointing season into a rather acceptable campaign for departing coach Terzic. If he can win this competition and get them into the Champions League, he will leave on a high note.

Holstein Kiel are slightly less fortunate of late. They are still in with a great chance to gain promotion to the Bundesliga for the first time in their history, but they have been struck down with a Covid-19 outbreak. This has resulted in them playing just four Bundesliga 2 matches in six weeks and they now have a lot of games to play in a short window of time. They should still at least make the playoffs, especially given the games in hand they have, but there could be some tired legs as they go into a run of four fixtures in ten days. The physios at the club probably wish they didn't have this DFB Pokal match to contend with but the fans will be overjoyed to be in a semi final against Dortmund. Coach Ole Werner will hope he can rotate his squad well enough to navigate this busy period and get them into the top flight, but for now his focus will be on trying to pull off another giant killing as they did against Bayern Munich in the second round.

Team News: Borussia Dortmund vs Holstein Kiel

Edin Terzic's side will be without Axel Witsel, Marcel Schmelzer and Dan-Axel Zagadou due to injury and Mamoud Dahoud after he was sent off in the previous round against Borussia Monchengladbach. He will however be able to call upon Jude Bellingham, as his red card against Wolfsburg only applies to Bundesliga fixtures. Mats Hummels couldn't play in that game due to suspension but is free to return here. In terms of squad depth, Dortmund are of course light years ahead of their opponents and with three season defining Bundesliga games coming up, Terzic may rest some players and rotate a little. He will want to keep his big names fresh for their next game against Leipzig, whose Bundesliga challenge will almost certainly be officially over in a matter of days. Julian Nagelsmann is expected to prioritise their DFB Pokal semi final against Werder Bremen and could do the opposite, resting players for the league game, with the title gone. Dortmund could see an opportunity to get a big win by playing second stringers for this and keeping the likes of Sancho, Haaland and Reus on ice for Leipzig.

In Holstein Kiel team news, coach Ole Werner will be without Ioannis Gelios who tested positive for coronavirus and Stefan Thesker (achilles). Apart from that, they will have a full strength squad to choose from now that their Covid-19 situation has been cleared up. It's a good thing too as Werner will need everyone fit and ready to go if he is to guide them through this intensely busy upcoming schedule. For now, he can focus on putting out his best team possible for the challenge of beating Borussia Dortmund in this semi final.

Prediction: Borussia Dortmund vs Holstein Kiel

The underdogs do have some quality and pace going forward, with the likes of Joshua Mees and Janni Serra, which they showed best in their second round victory over Bayern Munich. They scored two goals to draw 2-2 in normal time before keeping their composure in a huge moment to win on penalties. They've shown since then that they have grit and determination to go all the way. Terzic shouldn't underestimate them. That being said, I think the fairytale will come to an end here. Lightning rarely strikes twice and I don't see them pulling off the kind of heroics they did against Bayern a second time. I think whatever team Dortmund field they will have too much for the Bundesliga 2 side and will run out winners.

Prediction: Borussia Dortmund 4-1 Holstein Kiel
