The three-part docuseries will hit screens in May 2023

A documentary about National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) club Angel City FC will premiere on HBO and streaming service HBO Max in May.

Titled ANGEL CITY, the three-part series will follow the creation of the Los Angeles-based soccer franchise and take viewers through their inaugural 2022 NWSL season.

Angel City FC amassed the highest average attendance in the NWSL during their debut campaign, attracting an average of 19,105 fans per game. Meanwhile, the Portland Thorns (15,543) and San Diego Wave FC (8,729) were second and third, respectively.

Although Freya Coombe’s side finished eighth last season – recording eight wins, five draws and nine losses along the way – there is a sense that Angel City FC can challenge the league’s top teams in 2023.

Boasting a majority female ownership group, the club is owned by a host of high-profile names. The group is led by actress Natalie Portman, who is one of the executive producers of ANGEL CITY, while stars such as Eva Longoria and Serena Williams are also on board.

It is believed that Angel City’s ties to multiple big-name celebrities will help drive the popularity of the upcoming documentary, much like Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney’s Welcome to Wrexham, which is among the best football documentaries out there.

According to the press release, the documentary “reveals the passion and grit needed to build a franchise from scratch and blaze a bold trail in the world of professional sports.”

The 2023 NWSL season got underway last weekend, with Angel City suffering a 1-0 defeat to Gotham FC in their opening match. Next up, Coombe’s side face the Orlando Pride, who were thrashed 4-0 by the Portland Thorns last time out.

Of course, time will tell whether ANGEL CITY can generate the same level of interest as other popular soccer documentaries. For fans of women’s soccer, however, this is a must-watch.
