The upcoming FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 will be aired on the Fox Sports Network. The marquee event will be handed, for the first time ever, a record five primetime slots on Fox.
The 2023 Women’s World Cup will be played in Australia and New Zealand from July 20 to August 20. All eyes will be on the US Women’s National Team, who will look to make it three World Cup triumphs in a row. That being said, the World Cup of 2015 (Canada) had 25.4 million primetime viewers with the US beating Japan 5-2 in the final. That number, however, dipped significantly in 2019 (France) with only 14.3 million viewers tuning in.
Now, the World Cup in Australia will be the first of its kind as far as Women’s football is concerned since the number of teams this year have been increased to 32 from 24, previously. Therefore, the competition will be much tighter and the optimism is that with Fox airing the 35 group stage matches in addition to the Quarterfinals, Semi-finals, Third-place, and Finals, the numbers could reach an all-time high. The group stage fixtures will be on FS1.
Fox’s main broadcast network will broadcast a lion’s share of the 29 fixtures with five of them appearing on primetime and 12 on weekends. So, all in all, history could be created this year as far as the viewership numbers of the Women’s world cup are concerned.
The USWNT are also operating under a new revenue-sharing scheme with the USMNT. Last year, following USMNT’s progression to the Round of 16, USWNT received more money than they ever did, following their two World Cup victories. So, this time, the USMNT will receive half of what the USWNT will earn in the event.
The tournament will kick off on July 20 with co-hosts New Zealand taking on Norway.
