FIFA, the governing body of world football, has announced a new and unique pre-match ceremony for all matches at the 2026 World Cup. The ceremony is designed to be an immersive experience that engages every spectator in the stadium.
In a departure from previous World Cups where starting XIs were positioned in a line facing one of the stands with mascots in front of them, FIFA's new approach involves all available players in a team's squad. These players will gather around the centre circle for national anthems, backed by extra-large country flag banners on the pitch behind them.
FIFA president, Gianni Infantino, said:
"As the Fifa World Cup grows, we continue to innovate the way the game is experienced. Having all players and referees face each other in the centre circle during the national anthems will create a moment of unity, pride and emotion that truly belongs to the teams and to everyone.
"The Fifa World Cup is about every player and every fan, and this new pre-match ceremony reflects that."
This change comes as part of FIFA's ongoing efforts to find innovative ways to introduce players that involve and captivate the entire stadium audience.
Lessons learned from Club World Cup 2025
The decision follows an experiment at the 2025 Club World Cup where each starting player had an individual walk-on introduction. However, this method proved unpopular as it added extra time to pre-match formalities and resulted in several games kicking off late. Taking these lessons into account, FIFA now aims to create what it calls a "360-degree ceremony" which promises an engaging experience from every seat in the stadium.
Under this new format, every player selected in each matchday squad will enter through a dedicated arch accompanied by mascots. All players from both full squads - up to 52 if all are available - will then come together at centre circle for line-ups and national anthems. As we move deeper into tournament stages, this ceremony is set to become even more spectacular with enhancements such as coloured smoke or pyrotechnics being introduced.
For sports fans worldwide - particularly those who enjoy both watching games live and sports betting - this new pre-match ceremony promises to add an extra layer of excitement and anticipation to the World Cup experience. By involving all players and creating a 360-degree spectacle, FIFA is not only enhancing the matchday experience for those in the stadium but also adding a new dimension for viewers tuning in from around the globe.
