The French attacker is struggling for game time at Stamford Bridge despite being in good form

Renowned football journalist Fabrizio Romano recently provided a fresh update on the ongoing speculations about Manchester United's interest in signing Chelsea playmaker, Christopher Nkunku. The Red Devils' struggle to score goals this Premier League season has led to increased speculation about potential new signings.

Manchester United has had a challenging start to their Premier League campaign, netting only 12 times in their first 11 games. This lack of firepower upfront has sparked rumours of potential reinforcements during the January transfer window.

The Nkunku speculation

Recently, it was reported that Manchester United made an enquiry for Chelsea’s French playmaker, Christopher Nkunku. However, acquiring him won't be easy or cheap as Chelsea is likely to demand £52 million for his services.

In an exclusive update on his YouTube channel, Romano revealed that contrary to reports, there hasn't been any contact between Manchester United and Chelsea regarding a possible transfer of Nkunku. While there is admiration for the Frenchman’s talents within Old Trafford, discussions about new signings at the start of next year have not yet begun.

Newly appointed manager Ruben Amorim is currently focusing on 'intensity', as mentioned during his initial conversations with the club’s hierarchy. Before considering any attacking additions in 2025, he plans first to assess the current squad performance thoroughly. While Amorim doesn’t hold full authority over transfers decisions at Old Trafford, he will undoubtedly have some influence on future transfer windows' plans.

Why signing Nkunku would be beneficial for Man Utd

Nkunku could potentially be a fantastic addition for Manchester United. At 27 years old and having been one of RB Leipzig's most sought-after attackers, he has proven his worth on the field. Despite a forgettable debut season with Chelsea due to injuries, Nkunku has managed to stay fit this term and is currently the Blues' top scorer with 10 goals.

However, despite his scoring prowess, he has barely started in the Premier League matches under manager Enzo Maresca since mid-August. This lack of game time could be a point of frustration for Nkunku and an opportunity for Manchester United to swoop in. Nkunku's versatility allows him to play anywhere in the final third and central midfield. Under Amorim's management, he could potentially slot as one of the wingers behind the main striker in a 3-4-2-1 formation. He could also form an exciting partnership with Bruno Fernandes.

Given United’s financial constraints, it seems unlikely that they would be able to afford a permanent transfer for Nkunku in January. However, considering a loan deal with an option to buy later might be feasible. While there are no concrete moves from Manchester United towards signing Christopher Nkunku yet, fans will undoubtedly keep their fingers crossed hoping that this talented Frenchman might soon grace Old Trafford.
