US based media conglomerate contemplating partnership with British telecoms giant
The proposed takeover of BT Sport by global OTT streaming service DAZN now looks to be in doubt. The two parties are reported to have been in advanced talks for months over the sale of the company's sports broadcasting arm but things appear to have gone cold. Speculation has been that BT would demand £600m for the sale but concerns over revenues and commercial issues, tied up in their broadband business, have led the would-be buyer to re-think the situation.
In light of this, another possible suitor has emerged in Discovery. The American mass media conglomerate is said to be interested in partnering up with BT and has made its intentions known. Rather than buy BT Sport outright, Discovery might look to buy itself in and work together with the British corporation. Discovery is best known as the owner of the Eurosport channels and the rights to the Olympic games which it broadcast this summer.

BT owns the lucrative rights to many Premier League games, and all UEFA club matches including the Champions League, Europa League and new Conference League, as well as several other top domestic leagues across Europe. Any purchase of these rights would transform the buyer into a serious player on the UK sports media market.
It is claimed that BT will make a decision by the end of the year about whether to team up with Discovery, sell to DAZN or take some other course of action. As of yet, all three organisations have declined to comment.
DAZN will be desperate to get this deal done as they look to build momentum after securing some domestic rights deals elsewhere in Europe. As it stands, they are mostly known for boxing in the UK but this agreement could make them a household name in a huge market.
