Brighton signed Van Hecke from NAC Breda in 2020 for a modest sum, but his value has now soared to £70m

Brighton & Hove Albion FC are bracing itself for a second bid from Tottenham Hotspur for their defender, Jan Paul van Hecke. This comes after the club rejected Tottenham's initial offer.

Van Hecke, a member of the Netherlands' World Cup squad, has only one year left on his contract with Brighton. The 25-year-old player was signed by Brighton in 2020 from Eredivisie team NAC Breda at a relatively modest sum. However, he is now reported to be valued by Brighton at £70m.

After loan spells at SC Heerenveen and Blackburn Rovers FC, Van Hecke has made significant strides in his career. The centre-back has made an impressive 131 appearances for Brighton so far, including starting in 36 Premier League matches last season.

Spurs' interest and reunion with De Zerbi

The new Spurs boss Roberto de Zerbi is keen to bring Van Hecke into his fold as he reunites with players he previously worked with during his tenure at Brighton. This move could potentially strengthen Tottenham's defence line-up while also providing a familiar face for De Zerbi.

In light of the recent unexpected departure of sporting director Jason Ayto, chief executive Paul Barber was put in charge of outgoing transfers by Brighton. Known for their hard-line bargaining stance and forward planning approach to transfers, it won't be surprising if Barber manages to negotiate an advantageous deal out of this situation.

Over the years, Brighton have received fees exceeding £50m for players like Moises Caicedo, Marc Cucurella and Joao Pedro which further strengthens their reputation as tough negotiators. Given Van Hecke's current contract situation - being just one year away from its expiration - it is likely that Barber, along with owner Tony Bloom, have a contingency plan in place if an agreement is eventually reached with Tottenham.

As the football transfer window continues to unfold, fans of both Brighton and Spurs will be eagerly watching the developments surrounding Van Hecke's potential move. Whether or not Tottenham will return with a more enticing bid for the Dutch defender remains to be seen. However, one thing is certain: Brighton's hard-line bargaining stance and strategic planning could play a significant role in determining Van Hecke's future.
