MLS fans missed two hours of Saturday’s action due to Apple failure

Fans of Major League Soccer (MLS) were left disappointed on Saturday as an Apple TV outage disrupted coverage of MLS Season Pass.

The new subscription-based streaming service was down for roughly two hours on a big night for US soccer lovers, with two games being affected by the technical issue.

Viewers on Apple devices missed the opening 45 minutes of the Portland Timbers’ 4-1 victory over the Seattle Sounders. Funnily enough, all five goals were scored in the second half of the game.

The outage also impacted the clash between the San Jose Earthquakes and Sporting Kansas City, with viewers missing the first half. San Jose defeated SKC 3-0 in a game that produced two goals and a red card before half time.

The disruption occurred between 21:40 and 23:20 Eastern Time (ET), and it affected other Apple services such as Apple Music, iTunes, Apple TV+, App Store and Apple iCloud.

Despite many frustrated subscribers taking to social media to complain about the issue and seek answers, both Apple and MLS failed to provide any explanation for the outage.

While some customers figured out that you could catch the action by bypassing the Apple TV app and watching the coverage on tv.apple.com through Google Chrome, many subscribers were left in the dark.

MLS Season Pass has been praised for its outstanding picture quality and modern features, but Saturday’s outage has brought attention to the streaming service in a negative way.

Given that Apple is set to stream all MLS matches for the next decade, soccer fans will be hoping that technical issues do not continue to get in the way of their beloved sport.

Elsewhere, Los Angeles FC defeated arch-rivals LA Galaxy 3-2, while St. Louis City SC thrashed FC Cincinnati 5-1 to stay one point clear of LAFC at the summit of the Western Conference.
