In a recent turn of events, former Arsenal legend Alan Smith has fired back at Alf-Inge Haaland's jibe at Arsenal. The father of Manchester City star striker, Erling Haaland, had taken a dig at the Gunners on social media following their 5-1 victory over City. However, Smith was quick to respond, telling him to 'get back in his box'.
Alf-Inge Haaland took aim at Arsenal after Myles Lewis-Skelly mimicked his son's goal celebration during the match. Sharing an image of Lewis-Skelly's celebration from Arsenal's X account captioned 'THIS TEAM', he sarcastically commented: "This Team that wins everything. Ehhhhh, not," referencing City's consecutive Premier League title victories over Arsenal.
Alan Smith responded on the Seaman Says podcast by reminding Alf-Inge Haaland about his own lack of major honours during his career.
Alan Smith, Arsenal legend, said:
"Haaland's dad had a little chip, didn't he? 'Saying, 'Oh, yeah, all those trophies you've won,' or something like that. I thought, "Oh, leave it'. It's just funny!
"By the way, Alf-Inge, you didn't win much! Back in your box. You can't live your life through your son, you know. It was a great moment, wasn't it? Those kinds of things are great."
Controversial celebration
The celebration by Myles Lewis-Skelly has sparked debate online and among pundits alike. It was this act that led to Alf-Inge Haaland’s criticism and subsequent response from Alan Smith.
Tony Scholes, the Premier League chief football officer confirmed earlier this week that celebrations will be scrutinised moving forward with potential disciplinary action in certain cases.
While it is common for emotions to run high in sports like football where competition is fierce and stakes are high; it is also important for players and their families alike to maintain decorum both on-field and off-field. This incident serves as a reminder that while banter can add spice to any sport event; respect should always be maintained towards all parties involved.
