Netherlands vs Norway
Tip: Goals Under 2.5
Key Points:
1. The last match between these two ended 1-1.
2. Norway have the best defensive record in the group.
3. The visitors talismanic goalscorer Erling Haaland is out through injury.
Group G is the place to be tonight with three teams vying for two qualification spots for World Cup 2022. Netherlands currently sit top of the group with Turkey two points behind in the playoff spot, and Norway in third on the same points but one behind the Turks on goal difference. Any number of things could happen this evening. Any of the three could win the group and take automatic qualification and both of these teams will be targeting the second spot at the very least.
The last time these two faced off it ended 1-1 but Norway's goalscorer on the night, the indomitable Erling Braut Haaland, is unavailable for this game due to injury. It will be a tall order for Stale Solbakken's side to take all three points away from home tonight against a Netherlands side whose only defeat in qualifying came in matchday one at the hands of Turkey. In recent fixtures they've been imperious going forward, avenging that defeat against the Turks by battering them 6-1, as well as putting six past Gibraltar and Montenegro. Norway, on the other hand, have scored less than half the number of goals the hosts have in qualifying, relying on a strong defence to pick up points, the best defence in the group in fact, only conceding six goals from nine games.
It will likely be a tight affair ending in a low scoring draw or win for the hosts. Norway don't score many goals and without their star man they are even less likely to get on the scoresheet. The Netherlands have conceded only four in six since the return of Louis Van Gaal for a fourth stint in charge. With a defence marshalled by arguably the world's best centre back in Virgil Van Dijk, Van Gaal will be confident that he can set up his side to keep a clean sheet. On the other hand, the Dutch have been free flowing going forward. Barcelona forward Memphis Depay has scored seven goals in four games and will be a key player for the hosts tonight.
This one looks set to be cagey and tight, and goals under 2.5 looks quite probable. In terms of a specific result, a 1-0 win for the Netherlands seems to be on the cards but a 1-1 draw wouldn't be a shock.
