Burkina Faso vs Tunisia Prediction
Tip: Result - Burkina Faso | Clean Sheet - Burkina Faso
Key Points:
1. Burkina Faso have reached the semi finals at AFCON 2013 and 2017
2. Tunisia have failed to score in four of their last seven matches
3. Burkina Faso have scored exactly one goal in all four of their AFCON matches
One of the least talked about AFCON quarter finals but most likely one of the tightest will take place on Saturday night when Burkina Faso face Tunisia.
The West Africans come into this match in very consistent form and are massively going under the radar as potential winners. Their defeat against hosts Cameroon in the curtain raiser was their first loss in over a year and they've followed that up with two wins and a draw, albeit requiring penalties to get past Gabon in the previous round after finishing second in Group A.
Tunisia finished third in Group F courtesy of a 4-0 win over lowly Mauritania. That win alone was enough to see them squeeze through as one of the four best third-placed teams, after a disappointing group stage which saw them lose to Mali and the lowest ranked team in the tournament, Gambia, both by a 1-0 scoreline. Their subsequent 1-0 win over Nigeria which setup this quarter final clash could therefore be seen as somewhat of an upset, despite the reputation Tunisia has at AFCON.
The North Africans still seem to have the steel needed to get them through when needed. The 2004 champions will be keen to book their place in an AFCON semi final for the second time since that victory. They have reached at least the quarters at seven of the nine tournaments hosted since then. This current crop may not look particularly frightening but they have the pedigree.
That being said, Burkina Faso have been no slouches themselves in recent years. Despite sitting 30 places below their opponents in the FIFA rankings, they've had greater success at AFCON finishing third in 2017 and second in 2013. They might not be one of the big names that many fans associate with the competition but they have gone mighty close to winning it on two occasions in recent memory.
We see this being a very tight game indeed, given what we've seen from both teams thus far, the general low scoring nature of the tournament itself and the immense importance of this tie. Tunisia have failed to score in four of their last seven matches with their victory over minnows Mauritania somewhat papering over the cracks. Burkina Faso have scored in all of their four games at the tournament, one solitary goal in each.
We see these trends continuing with Burkina Faso scoring one goal and holding on for a 1-0 win to reach the semi finals for a third time in their last four appearances.
