Prediction: 0-2
Tip: Result - Bournemouth | Clean Sheet - Bournemouth
Key Points:
1. Barnsley haven't won since they beat fellow strugglers Derby back on 3 November
2. Bournemouth have won four of the last five meetings between the two sides
3. Barnsley have scored in just one of those last five meetings
Bottom side Barnsley welcome promotion hopefuls Bournemouth to Oakwell in search of a much needed three points to keep their slim hopes of survival in the Championship alive. The Yorkshire club come into the match on the back of a long run of poor results stretching back to their last win, which came in early November last year against the team then bottom of the table, Derby County.
The Tykes have struggled to score this season, possessing the worst goalscoring record in the league, and that has fundamentally been their undoing. There are several teams in the lower half of the table with a worse defence but they just cannot seem to score enough goals.
They have managed to score one goal in three of their last five league games but on all three occasions proved to be not enough. In the other two games they failed to score against playoff chasing West Brom and Nottingham Forest. That is to be expected given the fact that The Baggies have the best defensive record in the league and Forest aren't far behind. However, it doesn't bode well for them against Bournemouth, the team with the second best defence in the division, marshalled by former England international and Chelsea captain Gary Cahill.
One slither of hope for the hosts will be Bournemouth's poor form coming into this game. Their promotion push has been dented somewhat by back-to-back defeats against Luton and Hull. It has only been two games and boss Scott Parker is unlikely to be too concerned but this could be something for Barnsley to latch onto.
However, given the head-to-head between these two, it's difficult to look past a routine Bournemouth win. The Cherries have defeated Barnsley in four of the last five meetings between the two sides. Barnsley have managed to score in just one of those matches.
For that reason, the safe bet here seems to be an away win and a Bournemouth clean sheet. On the off chance that Barnsley do find the back of the net, the visitors are likely to outscore them and win the game.
