Chief executive of the Italian top flight told clubs about amibitous new targets for international TV rights

Serie A Chief Executive Luigi De Siervo has told Serie A clubs of his plans to triple the league's international broadcast rights revenue by the end of this decade. According to Reuters, he presented figures to club executives outlining his hope to transform their current revenue haul from global rights sales, which is around €670m, into just shy of €2bn by 2027.

The leader of the Italian top flight is anxious to keep pace with the English Premier League, whose most recent global rights deal saw them generate over $6.5bn.

At €670m, the money that Serie A makes from selling its TV rights internationally pales in comparison, an issue experienced by all other leagues in the sport.

As part of his plan to catch up with the Premier League, De Siervo has told clubs he plans to grow the value of those international rights from €670m to €1.1bn for the 2024-2027 cycle, and then hopefully to €1.9bn for the 2027-2030.

Serie A is also said to be targetting a huge increase in value for its domestic TV rights too. Those rights are a lot more lucrative with the league currently bringing in €2.9bn from its current agreement with DAZN and Sky Italia. De Siervo hopes to increase that to €3.1bn by 2024-2027 and €3.3bn for 2027-2030.

Serie A hasn't lacked innovation with its approach to growing its global brand. There have been forays into the multiverse, automated highlights, and other technological advances.

They have created specific content in different languages for various markets, taken the Supercoppa Italiana to the Arab world, and even made live matches available for free on YouTube in certain regions.

The league has already opened a base in New York and looks set to do the same in London and Abu Dhabi as it tries desperately to wrestle away the chokehold which the Premier League has on global football audiences, and in turn increase revenue generated from selling international broadcast rights.

There is also significant talk of Serie A creating a new media business. This move almost came to fruition back in November 2020, but private investment was blocked by several member clubs. It has been reported that Serie A will once again discuss the option this month after receiving renewed interest from investors.
