The Reds documentary will now be revised spotlighting Jurgen Klopp’s entire tenure at Anfield

Liverpool FC, one of the most iconic football clubs in the world, had announced plans for a behind-the-scenes documentary covering their 2023-24 season. However, following the departure of their long-standing manager Jurgen Klopp, these plans have been significantly altered.

The original intention was to provide fans with an exclusive look into Liverpool's 2023-24 season. This plan was announced in January 2024 but underwent significant changes after Jurgen Klopp decided to leave his position as manager at Anfield. Klopp had been with Liverpool for nine remarkable years and announced his decision to depart just weeks after the documentary announcement. At that time, Liverpool was pursuing a potential quadruple but ended up securing only the Carabao Cup trophy during Klopp's final season.

The London-based company Lorton Entertainment is producing this documentary. Interestingly enough, it has been reported by The Telegraph that negotiations for this project began well before news of Klopp’s departure surfaced.

From seasonal insight to legacy overview

Originally planned as an eight-episode series focusing on one season, the revised format will now consist of four episodes spotlighting Jurgen Klopp’s entire tenure at Anfield. Since leaving last May, he has been re-interviewed with a broader focus on his overall time at the club.

Other key figures who contributed significantly to Liverpool’s success during Klopp’s near-decade stay have also reportedly been interviewed for this series. It is expected that a streaming platform will pick up this series; however, it remains unclear which platform that might be.

Financial implications and precedents

A major factor influencing Liverpool's decision to proceed with this documentary project was its potential income generation capacity. Rival clubs such as Manchester City, Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal FC have previously produced similar documentaries capturing behind-the-scenes activities, each generating millions in revenue.

These series, released in 2018, 2020 and 2022 respectively, were all produced by Amazon Studios and are available on Amazon Prime. Other platforms like Netflix and Disney+ have also had success with their respective series covering Sunderland AFC and Wrexham AFC in recent years.

The shift from a season-specific documentary to a broader overview of Klopp's tenure at Liverpool is an interesting development. It reflects the significant impact Klopp has had on the club during his time there. While fans may have been looking forward to insights from the 2023-24 season, they can now anticipate a comprehensive look at one of Liverpool's most successful periods under Jurgen Klopp.
