The West Ham star has put John Stones on same pedestal as Van Dijk

West Ham United winger, Jarrod Bowen, has recently suggested that Manchester City defender John Stones is on par with Liverpool's star centre-back, Virgil van Dijk. This comparison comes as a significant compliment to Stones from his fellow Englishman.

With 157 Premier League appearances under his belt prior to the recent match between West Ham United and Everton, Bowen has faced numerous defenders. However, he singled out two top-flight defenders for special praise - John Stones and Virgil van Dijk.

In a short clip shared on the Premier League YouTube channel, Bowen was asked to pick a defensive option for his ideal five-a-side team. Without hesitation, he named Stones and Van Dijk as his top choices.

West Ham United forward, Jarrod Bowen, said:

“I’ve got two that have come into my mind. I’ve got Van Dijk and John Stones, because John Stones in a little five-a-side when his blocking of shots is incredible, but then Van Dijk would be that solid defender, no one’s getting past him.”

Stones has been the underrated hero of City’s success every year

Manchester City signed centre-half John Stones from Everton in the 2016 summer transfer window for a hefty fee of £47m. Since then, Stones has made an impressive 248 appearances for the club across all competitions.

The last time Bowen came face to face with Stones on the pitch was during City’s 3-0 win over West Ham in the Premier League last season at Etihad Stadium. Despite not having much to do that night, Bowen clearly thinks highly of his England teammate's ability on the pitch.

Virgil van Dijk has set the benchmark for every defender in League

Liverpool defender, Virgil van Dijk is often considered one of the best centre-backs of this Premier League era by many pundits and fans alike. Being compared to such a player is indeed a big compliment for any defender.

During their encounter, Stones made two interceptions, one clearance and won four out of eight duels he was involved in against Bowen's team - further solidifying his reputation as an elite defender.

Bowen's praise underlines both players' significant contributions to their respective teams and their standing within English football. It also highlights how highly regarded these defenders are by their peers in terms of skill level and impact on matches.

While comparisons between players can often be subjective and dependent on personal preferences or team loyalties, it is clear that both John Stones and Virgil van Dijk have left indelible marks on those they've played against - including Jarrod Bowen himself.
